Sizing an Air Conditioning System

Here is a rough guide to calculate the approximate size of cooling equipment you should buy to effectively cool the area selected.

 Instructions for Use

1. Measure the length of the room and then measure the width.

2. Multiply one measurement by the other and this is your square area.

3. If you measured in feet then use the multiplier on the square feet chart table below.

If you measured in metres then use the multiplier on the square metre chart table below.

4. The answer will be the approximate amount of heat your room develops in Watts, and this is the cooling capability of equipment you will need to keep the area cool.

For Example - Bedroom
length 5metres x width 3.5metres = 17.5m2 square area
60 x 17.5m2 square area = 1050 Watts or 1.0kW

To Convert Watts to Btu's and Vice Versa

To calculate Watts from Btu/h simply divide the Btu/h figure by 3.4

Example is 7500Btu/h divided by 3.4 = 2205Watts or 2.20kW.

Conversely, Btu's can be calculated from Watts by multiplying Watts by 3.4.

Example is 2205Watts Multiplied by 3.4 = 7497Btu's.

Remember this is only an approximate guide, and if in doubt you would always be advised to select a larger duty unit to be on the safe side. Alternatively you could e-mail us giving your room details and we will forward a heat gain calculation.
